Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Replay technology will make its debut at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Players will gain the ability to contest particular rulings made by the chair umpire, echoing the system already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move arrives only a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
