At least 13 individuals lose their lives and 98 injured in train derailment in Mexico.
A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key government projects.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine what caused this accident,” stated the national leader.
The president reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another massive rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The development of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in civilian projects. They were executed at an accelerated speed, beating predictions to be partially launched before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked ongoing questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This pause was proposed until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."
In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and management of these strategic undertakings.
